I don’t have a “themed” photo to go with this post other than this one because today is Grandma Rose’s mom’s birthday! Mary Elizabeth Eccard Jones was born August 12th, 1878, in Washington Township in Pickaway County to Gideon Eccard and Mary Elizabeth Drake. So join me in wishing her a happy 147th birthday. 🙂
Did anyone get a chance to visit her grave this week? Just curious….
NOTE: As always, I left her spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much as possible.
_____ WEEK 32 _____
August 5, 1978 – Head feels woozy after last nights headache. Got us 9:40. Could have slept all forenoon – ate peanuts last night – woke up 2:45 with the heaves – nightmares before that. Swore someone was ruffling papers in the living room. Took Maalox and went back to bed. Slept straight thru until Len called me – after breakfast, watered fox gloves and cleaned grass from area around maple tree. Trimmed edge of bank flower beds from locust tree to mum bed by lilac bush – emptied cart load of weeds and old daisies.
Len put legs on Ethels box and fixed one end for spools of thread. Next he’ll fix a place for scissors. Cut Lens hair.
August 6, 1978 – Got up about 9:30 After breakfast, I ran sweeper in kitchen, living room and hallway. Len dressed, made bed, and went to garage to work. I baked a chocolate cake before lunch – Didn’t feel well. Still have the darn headache. Took two pills.
Took a 1½ hr. nap while the cake cooled – made frosting for the cake – then cleaned cloth on kraut –
Fixed canned chicken for our supper and cooked noodles. Len put box on end of the sewing box – Tired tonight but watched “How the West Was Won.”

August 7, 1978 – Got up 9:00 Mailed letter to Mom Hochmuth. Had breakfast, dressed and fed cats. Len made bed and went to garage to work. I decided to paint sewing cabinet – Nothing else interested me. Gave cabinet 1st coat of Alaskan paint with varnish added that Len had used on book shelf – shade of pink.
After lunch, watched “soaps” until 3:00. Then washed molding around ceiling in hallway. Then painted the ceiling in hallway. Then painted the ceiling. Got done little after 5:00.
After supper, carried half dozen buckets water from tub to green house and cleaned paint brushes. Len did supper dishes.
Len cleared out S.W. and N.W. corners of the garage.
August 8, 1978 – Got up about 9:00 Len had put away the supper dishes and had my coffee poured after I got my face washed and I got dressed. Ate breakfast and mailed a letter to Pearl. Fed cats and got ladder from garage and started washing walls.
Len put hole in handle of garden tools so he could hang them. Put up another peg board. I painted around moulding so could paint 1st 2 panels of living room ceiling. Len painted 1¾ panels. I finished – He got dizzy.
August 9, 1978 – Got up 9:00 After breakfast, Len dressed and made bed while I strained the rest of the gallon of paint – He started in on the 3rd and 4th panel of living room. He finished over half and I watched my soaps after lunch. After soaps, I finished the last couple feet of each panel – his arms were tired – and he looked tired. Washed up brushes and painting things.
August 10, 1978 – Got up 9:00. Had breakfast, Fed cats – Took bath and washed my hair. Ethel and Ralph taking me to Circleville to Bank. (Deposited my Life Insurance check in Savings for my burial fund.) Went to Revco, grocery, and Jim’s Pay and Save for paint for trellis and 2×6’s.
Ran into an awful storm on way home between O’ville and Tarlton. Stopped there and got fish for sandwiches at their church fish fry and ate here before they went home. Had a terrific lightning and thunder rain storm that cut off the power while we ate – They left when a lull in the storm – About 5:30. We sat with the oil lamp and a candle. Power cam on 9:25 – off just 5 hours. Had to take ice cream to big freezer. Changed cloth on kraut today.
(Note on side: “Len cleaned moulding of paint in living room while we were at Circleville, Quite a job. Had to sweep all water from garage after the big storm.”)
(Note at top: “Picked out first yellow tomatoes. A treat.”)
August 11, 1978 – Got up at 9:00 Cut up and froze 4 chickens I got yesterday while Len made bed and dressed. Then he started washing the kitchen moulding and upper wall and tops of the cupboards. He wouldn’t let me do any of it, so I ran sweeper in the room and hung part of the pictures. I carried several buckets of water from oval tub to green house – Boxed up frozen chicken and put all the bread in freezer.
Put piles of dry grass Len cut a few days ago onto the compost piles, and checked tomato plants for worms. Found one on plant in iron kettle.
Len got things ready to paint kitchen ceiling.
