Grandma Rose seemed to have had a relatively bland/quiet week, as did I, since I’m still recovering from my hospital stay and am supposed to be “resting”. Blah. She also didn’t give me a lot of ideas to inspire a photo to accompany her entries this week, so I thought I’d share one I was given. It was after Leonard had passed and she was living in Ashville near the pool, next door to the Adams family, who is the lady in the photo. Dotty Adams – was that her name? Anyway, if I remember correctly, it was Jason Adams, the son (who I went to school with), who passed this photo of her to me eons ago. They enjoyed living next to her very much and found her extremely sweet and entertaining.
NOTE: As always, I left her spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much as possible.
_____ WEEK 30 _____
July 22, 1978 – Didn’t get up until 9:30. Really slept last night. Woke up before daylight with headache so took 2 buffered aspirin. Woke up 9:30 feeling fine. Canned last 4 pints of beets after breakfast. Len went to garage to work after making bed. 12 noon went to garage and worked more sorting material. Len changed file boxes to another box and put away more quart caps in cupboards.

After lunch we went to garage. I did some ironing and worked on green dress while Len worked on the old shell box, getting it ready to put a lid on it to keep my keepsake pictures in. Ralph and Ef gave me the box the day they had their sale.
Had beef and noodles for supper.
Rain a very little bit this evening. Enough to barely dampen the ground and perk the flowers slightly.

July 24, 1978 – Got up 9:30 Really rained toward morning. Couldn’t get outside early. Had breakfast 9:30 after mailing letter to Rosie. Len went to garage to put lid on my box and I worked on North bank flower bed – pulled weeds & drying Daisies from maple tree to stop sign. Rained me in at 11:45.
Watched “soaps” while finishing decoration on green dress. After supper Len worked in garage while I pulled grass from tomatoes, dug 4 hills of potatoes, cleaned all old poppies, grass and weeds from old rose beds where I have day lilies and Ethel’s poppy and creeping veronica.
Transplanted two big marigolds from B’way bed to Rose bed. Set out artemisia in B’way bed. Len sharpened sickle, so I cut grass and honeysuckle from top of bank – from sumac up to mock orange bush. Loppered off the old elm bushes.
July 25, 1978 – Got up 9:30 Slept in again. Guess those hot days last week took their toll – after breakfast, Len went to the garage to work on the trellis for the front and I headed out to gathered up my debri from yesterday. Cut off more limbs from locust tree. Hauled away a piled up cart full. Worked on more ground for strawberries.
After lunch watched soaps, then went out at 3:00 and hoed new hedge plants and all flowers from lilac bush to the maple tree. Quit about 5:00 Picked beans for supper. Had pork steaks, new beans and potatoes.

After breakfast, I canned 5 pints of beans while Len worked more on scraping paint from shed door – Also changed hasps on shed and greenhouse door so I can open them easier. Then worked on trellis – 2nd part.
After lunch, I watched “soaps” then canned 4 more pints beans. While cooker cooled put wash to soak – Set out another impatiens plant and cuttings of three more cuttings of wandering Jews in breezeway bed.

July 28, 1978 – Got up 8:00. Put on coffee water. After breakfast we filled the big sprayer and gave the Japanese beetles another good dose of Sevin. They are still very bad and there seems no end of them. Chewing grape leaves, about anything that’s green.
Did two lines of washing. After washing “soaps” Len did wash – I hung out. Beetles got on the wet clothes; half a dozen on some of the wash clothes and other things – went out to take wash of line about 6:30. Lot of them had left after the clothes dried. Some I had to knock off the clothes pin. Hate them.
Len dug out old round tap truck to work on. Len finished 2nd part of the trellis at 6:30 yesterday.
Took bath and washed my hair tonight. Felt buggy after all the Jap beetles. Len folded the washing for me. Not so hot today.
