#monday in a nutshell. No-fault accident at 9:45, no injuries. 10:30 rode to repair shop with tow truck and fell out of said tow truck and sliced my ankle wide open. Ended up in the ER for 7 stitches! #2020sucks #mondaymayhem

Happened to me today! Found the headstone for Will

Happened to me today! Found the headstone for William Halsey who was a black man duped out of his bounty for the #CivilWar and I’ve been scouring our #cemetery for him. Today we scrubbed a stone and magically, there he was. Tears y’all, literal tears. My personal project has been to identify all the #USCT soldiers in the #Washingtonville cemetery. William here was my first and he’s about one of 14 so far that’s been verified to be with us. So many of them had been forgotten and undocumented so to find William today, my heart melted and I hugged his stone. ❤️ #uscoloredtroops #genealogy #Halseyfamily #genealogymeme

Don’t you ❤️ #cemetery mysteries? I like the hard ones that you can barely read like this little gem for Frank #Hulse . Now I just have to identify his parents which is the most worn part of this stone. Off to the #censusrecords ! You may be wondering why the census instead of the cemetery records. They’re very spotty journals and notebooks and most are names with no dates. Helpful, eh?! How do you solve cemetery identification problems?

All of these flags in the #Washingtonville #cemetery are possible hits for sunken or missing headstones for the US Colored Troops from the #CivilWar that we probed today. We had a total of 18 hits and next comes light digging to see if it’s an actual sunken stone, a tree branch or whatever. So excited to be honoring these gentlemen and their service. #USCT #NY20regiment #NY26thregiment

I hate being on film! Recording bits of my New Yo

I hate being on film! Recording bits of my New York #genealogy story today for @nyfamilyhistory at #WestPoint and it’s not going well! The elements are not cooperating, trains going by, and cadets yelling in the background on The Plain. I’ve laughed, I’ve cussed and nearly cried and it’s not even 10 am. Going to be a long day!

I haven't shared a #headstone photo in hot minute so I thought I would today. This sandstone gem vexes me. This style is quite reminiscent of the #headstones in Cape Cod we saw on vacation. It's gorgeous but it's so far sunk down and/or broken, you can't even make out the name. I'm one who always wants to know what it says - it's the #genealogist in me! This is the Presbyterian Church & Cemetery on the main drag in #Marlboro in #UlsterCounty New York. It's not my favorite #cemetery by far. There are broken stones tossed in the bushes and they've propped others up with broken bits. Just makes me cringe every time I go by. But this little red hump in the dirt make me smile. I *love* sandstones.

When every other #familytree is wrong and you know it and then find the proof to back it up. Yah. Having that moment! These are my great grandparents from #MorganCoKY and all online trees said they married in 1920. But I *knew* that had to be wrong as his 1918 draft card had her listed as his nearest relative. Sure enough, after some heated debates, I found their marriage record for 19 May 1917! Totally vindicated and proof (again) that I need to trust my #genealogy gut instinct more. It was just logical, really. She wouldn’t have been named as a #relative if they weren’t married so I knew the 1920 date was suspect from the get go. Tiny details, ya’ll. Check every document! That #draftcard was key. 🔑 🤓

Yes! Two #NSDAR #supplementals done and ready for the mail tomorrow. So excited to add these two #patriots to my #lineage - Joseph #Hoffhines and Jacob #Tritsch both are buried in our family plots at #ReberHillCemetery in my hometown of #AshvilleOhio . I wasn’t fully into #genealogy or #RevolutionaryWar #history then as a kid to appreciate them or their service. Now I have to made special trips to Ohio from NY to pay homage to Joseph but it’s totally worth it. 🇺🇸🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Here it is: my elusive 5th GGF’s death record from 1868 from #pickawaycounty #ohio was finally found! One step closer to finishing my next #nsdar supplemental for his father Joseph #Hoffhines . So excited to finally have this piece of my history.

I meant to share this the other day. I’ve been working on a #supplemental application for #NSDAR and I have never seen such a nasty bit in a #will before! This is my 5th GGF's will. "My son in law James Wilkinson hath highly offended and disobliged me of his conduct in life hath rendered himself unworthy to be called or taken notice of as a son in law." He goes onto give him $100 but then goes on to say that his daughter Sarah, James' wife, that the executors (her brothers) control her share for her and her kids. Crazy... that James must have been a real cad! That’s a rabbit hole for another day though. .

My patio #victorygarden is in full swing. This morning I had to sting up peas, prune my blueberry bush, treat my peppers and tend to my corn. I didn’t believe #containergardening #corn was a thing but mine is going crazy well. Both a sweet corn variety and a blue variety from @hudsonvalleyseedco that I’m so excited for!
