Grandma Rose seemed to have a quiet week or at least, she didn’t have time to write much about any of it.  New relatives pop in this week and if you’ve never met them before, let me introduce you – Henry is Henry Buzzard, who is married to Grandma’s sister Olive aka Ollie, who is also mentioned this week.  Don is Donald Ralph Long who is Ethel and Ralph’s son, so Grandma’s nephew.  Jerry that gets mentioned is Jerry Peters, who is the son of John Henry Peters and Mary Belle, one of Grandma’s other sisters.  Random Fun Factoid:  Grandpa Archie and Jerry lived in the same house in the 1950 census with Grandma Rose’s parents and worked on their farm together.

I kept trying to find an old ad or photo for Steak Plus restaurant/diner as this is the second time she’s mentioned eating there but I haven’t been able to locate it.  I’m wondering if it had another name like “Robert’s Steak Plus” or something that I’m not aware of but so far, my search has been nil. Anyway, slow week for her but she did manage to snag a little treat for herself, and after all the aches and pains she’d been experiencing and tending to Leonard before his surgery, I’d say she deserved a little chocolate therapy.  Go on Grandma!  Treat yo self!

NOTE:  As always, I left her spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much as possible.

April 16, 1977 – Ethel and I worked in the flower beds a while, went to see Len in the evening. Took his shaving things. First time he’s shaved in 10 days. He sure needed one. Made him look lots better. Took him some candy bars and cigarettes.

Ralph, Ef and I had supper at Steak Plus. Steak, potatoes, salad, coffee and pie. I took Len big cup of coffee. He insisted I drink half of it – (after all that supper!) Yuk!

Stopped at Groveport and had a fudge sundae about 8:45. Delicious!

April 17, 1977 – We all slept late. Took a ride down around Lancaster – Beautiful ride thru the hills. Banks abound with red bud, wild phlox & ferm coming thru the ground. Stopped at Henry’s for half an hour. Ollie hadn’t come down. Henry & Jerry were planting potatoes on Suorcal (sp?) Ridge. Drove by Michael Landous farm. Beautiful lawns, house and white barn.

Called Len in evening. Went to Dons for a short while in evening. Don showed us his house then on to the old house and lot he bought. Hopes to build a new garage there.

April 18, 1977 – Ethel and I worked in the flowers today. Ralph cut down the sycamore over the leech bed. Made myself a cane from one of the branches. Ralph smoothed it up nice for me.

Thought for the day: “Determine that the thing can be done then do it.”

April 19, 1977 – Worked in the flowers: Went in evening to Don’s.

April 20, 1977 – Ralph took me to the hospital (gave him $3.00). Visited Len an hour or so. Kim came to pick me up. She visited with Len while I went up street to get him a carton of cigarettes.

Stayed at Rosies all night. Enjoyed it very much. Hadn’t been there for a long time. We spent an hour with Carol H & Jake. Carol gave me a nice hat (straw). Slept in east room.

Thought for today: What this country needs is a good five cent nickle. – Anonymous. [Jill’s note – actually, it’s attributed to Franklin Pierce Adams, a columnist and radio panelist.]

April 21, 1977 – Spent the day very quietly at Rosies – Kim and Rosie at work – Robin and Darryl at school. Carol came over at noon and cut my hair – Love it.

Tried to fix the stitch on Rosies machine – Not too bad, but couldn’t find the oil to oil it. Darned a few socks.

Rosie brot me home in the evening and we took a turn around the yard with Caroline Johnson. Later removed storm windows and put screens in three windows for some air. House stuffy.

April 22, 1977 – Slept on the couch last night. Seemed strange being in the trailer alone but slept well. Good to be home. Forgot to bring home my sycamore cane. Darnit. I could use it sometimes.

Thought: He who hesitates is not only lost but also gets a dent in his rear bumper.
