I don’t have many photos of her and my mother together but since her birthday is mentioned here and it’s tomorrow, here’s a very blurry photo of Lisa Stewart with her dad Archie Stewart, little sister Lori, and Grandma Rose.

Two birthdays this week for grandma and a day visit spent with her sister Ethel and husband Ralph Long.  I’m very intrigued and yet, horrified, by the thought of salad dressing cake but that sounds most definitely like a 1970s recipe that is made fun of on Facebook now!  It’s funny she mentioned hearing new birds as I’m starting to hear new birds here in New York this week as well.  My cardinals are making an early appearance and fighting with the blue jays already.  They say you’re officially old when you start getting excited about birds… I’m realizing that in 1977, Grandma Rose was 66, only 16 years older than I am now and I’m already excited by birds!  Great –  guess I’ve arrived.

NOTE:  As always, I left her spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much as possible.

February 12, 1977 – Got up to a dreary misty morning – Started sprinkling around noon.

Took care of meat and groceries this forenoon + numerous trips to the freezer. Awfully slushy today but don’t need all the sweaters today I usually wear.

February 13, 1977 – Lisa Lemaster’s B’day

Ethel and Ralph came down for an hour or so to see how we were holding out. Ethel over her broncheal cold and looked plump and healthy. Took a tour of the green house – Flowers don’t look so hot this winter.

Baked an apple sauce cake for Len this morning and 2 ½ doz cookies.

While I got supper, I baked a salad dressing cake.

Had quite a squall about 3:00 P.M. so Ef and Ralph scooted toward home – Ef wanted to stop at Big Bear and Murphy Mart on the way home.

Sent Kim birthday card.

Snowed pretty good for a while this forenoon. Not supposed to accumulate but revised forecast says it will. Up to 2″.  Buffalo will trying to get rid of their 15 to 20 foot piles. Haven’t heard from mom or Dorothy yet.

Sent mom a pretty card today. She enjoys them so much.

Don’t know what’s wrong with my amaryllis. Doesn’t seem to want to bloom this year.

February 15, 1977 – Kim Glick B-day

Worked all forenoon. First I’ve used the washer this year. Been doing hand washing during the real cold weather, just what we needed to get by. Had 4 ½ lines across the garage today.

Snow flurries this afternoon.

Took four pictures of the snow this morning. Didn’t have a film when the Big Snow was on but won’t need pictures to remember how it was during the giant blizzard.

February 16, 1977 –  5 P.M.   17° airport   19° Col.

Nice, beautiful sunshine this morning. Always a welcome this cold weather. Don’t feel like getting started today. Stiff I can hardly move. Knew I would be, not wearing my brace when I washed yesterday, cleaned and changed bed. Biggest project.

Took 1 ½ hr. nap this afternoon. Couldn’t stay up any longer. Took two pills and stretched out on the bed. Len worked on his embroidery – a snow scene. The evenings are quiet. Len at his hobby and me sewing or writing in my ledger.

More nice sunshine. I heard a different bird this morning before I got up. All I’ve seen this winter are sparrows.

Got in some of the wash from the garage and ironed half a doz. pillow cases. Cut one of my old uniforms off and made myself an overblouse to wear with my slacks.

Big four alarm fire Gay and High Streets – almost an entire block. Largest fire since the Ohio Pen. fire in 1930 when inmates perished.

Cloudy all today – Rather dreary.  Didn’t do much today – Hips and legs hurt so bad – hard to move my feet.

Len finished his snow scene crewel embroidery he got for Christmas.

31° – 11:00 P.M. Calm South winds.
Low tonight in upper 20’s.

Made one coat hanger (brown).
